Collage, assemblage, ceramics, acrylics, oils, photography, sculpture, mixed-media and more – masterpieces of all shapes, size and color - will be on display during the Dallas Arts Revue’s 30th Anniversary Member Show. Curated by J.R. Compton, the show brings together the amazing works by more than thirty Dallas-based artists to celebrate the remarkable wealth of creative talent that resides in Big D.
While the Revue is a sampling of many different themes, The Back-Room Invitational, an exhibit that runs simultaneously, is a look at eight Dallas artists whose work explores the third dimension in unusual ways. Exhibit runs through January 30, 2010

Whenever it’s fall at the Arboretum time, it’s hard not to feel shamed into wandering the spray paint isle pondering colors to redo the lawn furniture and tackling all those HGTV must do projects! The funny thing is, our projects are planned to be designed on a dime but invariably, after one slip of the screw driver, it generally spirals into the tens of thousands.

Dallas Arboretum
When you look at the cost of a movie - about $10 times your entire family, a day at the Arboretum is not only a deal but a great way to connect through walking, talking and a picnic rather than staring at a movie screen. Oh we love the movies but spending the day outside feels like you’ve been on a staycation and burns a lot of energy.

Burlesque Comedy Show
Remember the I Love Lucy skit when she was in burlesque costume trying to break into the movies in a movie scene– my favorite part was when the star (not Lucy) was shot with a gun and Lucy took the opportunity to pretend she was shot to get the attention of the director and producer. Although it didn’t work out, she got back at them by writing her name on the bottom of her shoe so viewers would know who she was. Hold that thought and magnify The Amour Show performance to the Nth degree.

The Amour Show
With the resurgence in Burlesque theatrical performances sweeping the nation and International competitions heating up, fitness clubs and gyms are adding the dance technique to a line up of classes along with Zumba and other popular dances so I sat down with Shoshana Portnoy (shown) over lunch recently for a Q & A about the vintage art form. Shoshana is the owner of Pin Curl Magazine and Pin-Up Photography.
Q: Everyone is talking about burlesque, so what exactly is it these days?
Portnoy: By definition, burlesque means “to make a spectacle of”. Burlesque is a performance art and can encompass a wide range of performances, but a visual spectacle which focuses on the tease, are both essential elements.
