West End

Established as a warehouse district in 1872, it’s been a destination for visitors, locals for lunch and suburbanites since the 1980’s.  They flock to the friendly brick paved historic area for one-of-a-kind restaurants from Tex-Mex to Texas steaks, sing-a-longs at karaoke bars, museums and for handmade cowboy hats at the infamous Wild Bill’s.  With the recent addition of new residential amenities, it’s handy for employees of the many professional businesses located there. Despite the eye rolling, urban Dallasites make a pilgrimage at least once a year for a festival or for dinner before Mavericks & Stars games. They blend in with touristas by sporting t-shirts that say “I ♥ Vaqueros Locos” (I love Crazy Cowboys)

Drop off Textiles for Recycle and benefit Heart House Dallas

Dude, get rid of it! Did you know that 2.5 billion lbs. of textiles are recycled every year? If you want to be authentic Saturday, April 23rd,  drop off clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, toys and stuffed animals, sheets and other gently owned soft goods between 10 am - 5 pm. We know it means spending a little time dealing with closets and drawers first, but The Earth will thank you - and it’s a drive-through.

Guitarist Matt Barron at Gators

Guitarist and sultry singer, Matt Barron will perform on Saturday at Gators. He has a distinctive hoarse voice that works for his performances of covers in a style, tempo and rhythm that reminds me of how a lower keyed Bruce Springsteen might sound if he were playing at an after gig, on the down low, in a NOLA bar. Cool!

Does Net Neutrality Loss = The New Ghetto

As a growing small media company owner, some of you know of my involvement in lobbying for Net Neutrality, which is the continued absence of regulation in regards to the Open Internet and something everyone should agree on and embrace.  This critical issue will be decided, as called by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski yesterday.  In the grand scheme of things, this affects all of us so today I’m encouraging all of you to learn about and support Net Neutrality and to encourage the FCC Board, located below, to vote against a Tier System on the Open Internet on December 21, 2010.

Austin's Reckless Kelly performs in the West End

Austin-based country roots-rockers, Reckless Kelly, headlines a free concert in the West End on Friday, October 1st.

Reckless Kelly got their start doing four set nights, playing to college kids in the historic Sixth Street bars.  Nominated for Best Band at the 2009 Americana Music Awards, Reckless Kelly has gained the attention of country music legends such as Robert Earle Keen, who co-wrote “God Forsaken Town” with Reckless Kelly’s own Willy Braun. Joe Ely describes their music as “my kind of band: hell-raising, hard playing, kick-ass songwriting, feet firmly in the present, but with an amazing knowledge of where it has all come from.” Reckless Kelly takes the stage at 9:30 pm.
