Uptown

Don’t let those shiny cars, toys and hot bodies fool you, the 130 year-old neighborhood’s got soul!  In addition to the 100 or so restaurants, bars and clubs, 4 hotels, 4 live theaters and a smattering of galleries and shopping primarily at West Village, it’s home to 4 historical cemeteries, the largest collection of Victorian Homes in Dallas and remnants of a Freedman’s town. They are serviced by an open-air street car system referred affectionately by locals zipping down McKinney as, “that damn trolley!”.  Don’t pass on Cedar Springs or the offshoot streets, there’s plenty there also.  In recent years the resident numbers have grown to mirror the work population and why it’s hopping all the time.  A lot is packed into the 1/2 half mile wide and one mile long neighborhood.

If you want to be authentic Saturday, April 23rd,  drop off clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, toys and stuffed animals, sheets and other gently owned soft goods between 10 am - 5 pm. We know it means spending a little time dealing with closets and drawers first, but The Earth will thank you - and it’s a drive-through.

Winston Churchill's Granddaughter, Celia Sandys will speak at World Affairs Council

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” – Sir Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill is most well-known for his defiant stance against Hitler’s Nazi Germany during World War II and his doggedness in pushing the allied forces forward until they took Berlin. Does Net Neutrality Loss = The New Ghetto

As a growing small media company owner, some of you know of my involvement in lobbying for Net Neutrality, which is the continued absence of regulation in regards to the Open Internet and something everyone should agree on and embrace.  This critical issue will be decided, as called by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski yesterday.  In the grand scheme of things, this affects all of us so today I’m encouraging all of you to learn about and support Net Neutrality and to encourage the FCC Board, located below, to vote against a Tier System on the Open Internet on December 21, 2010.

SEALE of Approval; Affordable Housing and Historic Preservation

The Dallas Architecture Forum’s Panel Season will continue the Forum’s exploration on important issues that impact us both locally and globally.

Katherine Seale (shown above) from Preservation Dallas will discuss how affordable housing and historic preservation can be natural allies when utilizing existing building stock to retain cultural identity and urban heritage. Too often these worthy goals do not work in productive harmony and the panelists will consider the interests of historic preservation and affordability from environmental, social, and economic perspectives.

Critic’s Notebook: A Look at Art and Artists in Post-postmodernist Times.

On Saturday, November 20, the MAC presents Critic’s Notebook: A Look at Art and Artists in Post-postmodernist Times. The talk is based on research Gomez has been doing for a forthcoming new book of art-themed essays. He will discuss such themes as the legacy of postmodernist critical theory, the role of craftsmanship as a powerful, expressive language in art-making and the blurring of the aesthetic line between works made by academically trained artists and their self-taught counterparts.
