Founded around the 1870’s, few Victorian homes once owned by prominent Jewish families, remain. In recent years, after a 50 year phase as a light industrial area, an influx of artists and designers have moved in. The once state-of-the-art distribution center and warehouse store, Sears Roebuck, locals referred to as “Sears on Lamar”, is now the historic apartment building, South Side on Lamar with gallery space for shows. Music clubs and venues featuring entertainment from around the world, coupled with recent development of affordable condos, makes the area prime for growth. The Convention Center is located there and recently added a new 1,000 room convention hotel. We’re watching for mixed-use developments to the South, to begin, any day now.
