The Cedars

One of the oldest areas having been founded around the 1870’s, few Victorian homes once owned by prominent Jewish families remain.  In recent years, it’s experienced a major influx by artists and designers after a 50 year phase as a light industrial area. What was once a state of the art Sears Roebuck or “Sears on Lamar” by locals - the distribution center is now the historic apartment building South Side on Lamar with artist space for shows.  The music clubs and venues featuring artists from around the world coupled with the recent development of affordable condos makes the area prime for growth as the Convention Center located there gears up for the new convention hotel.  We’re listening for rumors of mixed-use improvements any day now…

A Tribute to Rusty Weir

To know Texas legend Rusty Wier was to love him.  One of the most prolific and colorful Texas artists ever to grace the stage, Wier was described as “the World’s Greatest Saloon Entertainer” and was best known for the track Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance, a version of which was recorded by Bonnie Raitt and became a hit when it appeared on the soundtrack of Urban Cowboy.

Art in the Hood VIII Studio Tour

Each year at this time, this group of established artists whose works are sought after nationally and internationally open their studios for demonstrations and discussion.  Located in the Southeast Dallas area within close proximity, there’s nothing “hoody” about it.

The piece shown is by Leila Strauch of Brazil.  Strauch learned her craft while sitting quietly in church studying the stained glass as a child.  Her Mother would reward her quietness by taken her around to the church windows afterward so she could study the glass pieces in detail.

Western Swing Dance

After having listened to KNON and the ups and downs of public radio music in Dallas, I have to admit every time I listen to the new station, KXT, it sort of feels like I’m cheating on KNON who’s been as loyal as an old porch dog.

Billy Bob Thornton and the Boxmasters

The concert in Dallas is their first stop in Texas before hitting Austin, Carl’s Corner, which is sold out and Houston. The Boxmasters will be performing tracks off their Christmas CD which is rockabilly with incarnations of Johnny Cash and sounds pretty good.  Christmas Cheer includes old time favorites We Three Kings, Christmas in Prison, Blue Christmas, I Won’t be Home for Christmas, Silver Bells and more plus their version of the Chipmunk Song, Christmas Don’t Be Late released in November, is a bonus track.

Band member J.D. Andrew said “‘The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)’ was my favorite Christmas song growing up and I wore the LP out on my Fisher-Price turntable.  And USA Today said ….”Thornton’s hillbilly-rock trio stuffs their stockings with twangy tunes like We Three Kings done in the style of Ring of Fire.”
