Established itself as a cool neighborhood with real economic and entertainment clout when Pride activism began in the working class neighborhood more than 30 years ago. Together, the many celebrated gay and lesbian clubs, cafes, shops, dance halls and bookstores work seamless with the mom and pop retailers and restaurants started by immigrants several generations ago. With the recent re-lo of so many non-gay urban dwellers who are attracted to the upscale high-rises, town homes, variety of restaurants, events and office towers; Oak Lawn long comfortable with itself, is experiencing a spark of renewed business energy and inclusiveness.
