Mockingbird Station/Midtown

This district has it all.  We just wish there was more of it.  It’s comfortable and has easy access from Lakewood, M-Streets and Park Cities.  Before Mockingbird Station on the northeast corner of Mockingbird and I-75 Central was built, the land was where the original Dr. Pepper plant was located.  The mixed use development consists of an indie movie theater, shopping, restaurants, a mix of retailers and personal services, offices, apartments and a light rail.  A hotel across the street on the southeast corner, is a fabulous mid-century that underwent a complete re-do.  It is also home to excellent personal services, salons, restaurants and residences.

Does Net Neutrality Loss = The New Ghetto

As a growing small media company owner, some of you know of my involvement in lobbying for Net Neutrality, which is the continued absence of regulation in regards to the Open Internet and something everyone should agree on and embrace.  This critical issue will be decided, as called by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski yesterday.  In the grand scheme of things, this affects all of us so today I’m encouraging all of you to learn about and support Net Neutrality and to encourage the FCC Board, located below, to vote against a Tier System on the Open Internet on December 21, 2010.

Can NPR Survive? Not as we know it and that's a good thing...

Let’s face it, million dollar business deals with television stations don’t happen overnight so why is anyone surprised the comment made by Juan Williams on NPR, to the overnight contract with FOX, was probably a well executed plan between Fox and Williams.  Hey that’s business, right?  Is NPR the unwitting fall guy?  Sure, but that wasn’t hard.

For a long time, they haven’t been rational in how they operate in the reality of cable television, internet radio and new media?  And let’s face it, they fell from their mission more than a decade ago.  Can it be saved?  “You betcha”!  But they will have to accept only parts of it will survive assuming they put the National back in National Public Radio. If they do, we need to get behind and make sure 110% of its funding comes from private funding rather than 98% so we don’t risk losing it and the television component, well…it needs to be retired.

And Then They Came For Me; Remembering the World of Anne Frank

We are constantly reminded by the news how new technologies can end in tragic results when video, texting, emailing and social media websites are used to bully.  By coupling technology with performance art, playwright James Still has created a new way of telling the compelling story.  Director John Beaird hopes the pairing of art and technology for this play will teach and affect young audiences to gain an appreciation, understanding and ultimately acceptance of people, despite their cultural and religious differences.

Bikini Protest at Dallas City Hall

In an effort to draw attention to the proposed city budget cuts for Swimming Pools and other quality of life amenities in Urban Dallas, organizers encourage students and young families to join them in swimwear at the fountain in front of City Hall on Wednesday, August 18th from Noon to 1 pm.

Organizer John Fullinwider, feels the city is going too far in restricting access to swimming pools in low-income neighborhoods where many pools have already been closed.  At issue are 7 additional pools that are proposed to be cut from the budget. The other 14 locations or 2/3’s of our pools have already been closed permanently according to the City of Dallas website

If arguably, families are not taking advantage of pool use during the day like they do at other neighborhood pools such as Tietze Park in the M-Streets where there are more stay at home Parents or Parents who work out of their home; maybe it’s time we look at how we operate our pools rather than closing them for lack of use and forcing families to send their kids on a bus to take advantage of popular municipal pools like Tietze.
