Knox

Although it’s not located in Highland Park, Knox Street is referred to as the Park Cities side of the highway of I-75.  Home to everybody’s favorite, no matter which side of the trail you live, Highland Park Pharmacy has been located there since 1912 and still has the best pimento cheese sandwich on white toast.  Eat it sitting at the counter. For some reason, it tastes better there!  More laid back than its Uptown neighbor and a better price point for apartments, the Knox area has easy access and is mixed with lots of restaurants that have international flavors. It has a nice selection of nationally recognized home furnishing retailers.

Lisa diStefano at Rising Gallery

WATERFRONT, an exhibition of landscapes featuring regional artist Lisa diStefano Benjamin Purvis opens Friday.
Lisa diStefano is known to her collectors for her bold abstracted landscapes and draws inspiration for her creations directly from her surroundings, often taking photographs of the landscape to use later in the studio. Earlier this year while walking the lakes surrounding LSU campus, she became transfixed by hundreds of flowering waterlilies thriving in the lakes which gave the illusion of solid ground. Days later, she returned again only to find the scene destroyed due to a toxin purposely introduced to the water by one of LSU’s groundskeepers. diStefano created these new paintings of suspended floral clusters adrift in abstracted waterways with the celebration of the beauty of that moment in mind.

Solving DISD Budget Crisis Will Take Common Sense Solutions

In reviewing the wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth over whose fault the current school debt crisis is in DISD, we can’t depend on the State. Citizens and Corporate Dallas needs to own up and quash the talk about firing or paying off teachers to leave which would raise the classroom ratio to 35/1.  It’s time we get real and do what should have been done a long time ago in regards to sales tax, property tax and privatization.

After thinking about it, it’s awfully coincidental that our public school failings, both fiscally and behaviorally, began when helicopter parents, lawyers and overly sensitive public school administrators jacked the Six Grade Crossing Guard.

Dallas Architecture Forum

Timothy J. Hursley

Architectural photographer, Timohty J. Hursley will be the featured speaker at the upcoming Dallas Architecture Forum Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Theatre.

In 2003 and 2004, Hursley photographed the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock (see below).  Hursley’s photographs, on view at the Historic Arkansas Museum, documented the center’s construction from the ground up.  According to Polshek Partnership Architects, “The William J. Clinton Presidential Center is located within a new 28-acre public park along the south bank of the Arkansas River, directly east of downtown Little Rock. The integrated architectural and site design transforms a former industrial site of old warehouses and undeveloped open space into a singular destination that is an integral element in the revitalization and expansion of downtown Little Rock.”

Taupe's the Dope for Nails this Fall

Fashion forward is not limited to pieces like the thigh-high boots that are hot, hot, hot this fall.  Girls and some of you guys; the nails can sometimes be the biggest statement you make.  Personally speaking, the first thing I size up when I meet a guy, are his hands and not for the obvious reason.  We’re not talking trash here people, we’re talking about getting ‘nailed’, as in taupe is the new black - the subtle elegance that’s chic and Parisian.
