Design District

One of the most misunderstood business districts in Dallas; we’ll feature news, who’s who now and not to miss sales and events in the Trinity Design District, the Design District and Dallas Market Center.  With more than 300 showrooms and art galleries open to the public in the vicinity west of I-35, it’s easier if you think of it as an outdoor mall for discerning tastes for home, office, gardens and private art collections.  With the addition of new residential communities, the Design District is evolving into an approachable spot for not only professional buyers but also for indie urban dwellers and shoppers looking to stumble upon bargains and rare finds.

ART OF THE STEAL

Just who’s art is it anyway?  That is the question ART OF THE STEAL director Don Argott attempts to answer with his timely documentary about the Barnes Foundation legal heist that can be seen at Samuel Lynne Galleries on Thursday, June 10.

It’s a dilemma that’s becoming harder to ignore.  As a result, fingers are pointing loudly more and more throughout the country between Museum members, donors, boards and philanthropists about what is to become of art treasures donated by collectors and in some cases artists.  Meant to be seen by the public or used as a learning tool, as opposed to being sold off to private art collectors for the economic health of the museum or institution, just whose art really is it?

Pianist Monty Alexander

If you’d rather have some cool jazz and a light meal on Cinco de Mayo, this fourth concert in their spring series features Pianist Monty Alexander.  After Alexander moved to the US in 1961 from Jamaica, within a few years he was playing in Vegas with legendary jazz giants like Ray Brown and vibraphonist Milt Jackson.  And he often accompanied Frank Sinatra when Frank sang at his friend Jilly Rizzo’s clubs in New York where Alexander had landed a regular gig.

Traveling the globe, he’s played with Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis and has recorded 60 albums.  At the encouragement of friend Wynton Marsalis, he recently created and directed two critically acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center productions including Lords of the West Indies and in November 2009 debuted Harlem Kingston Express

Fancy Footwork at HCG Gallery

The group show exhibit promises to be exciting, cutting edge and incorporate a variety of styles into one over-arching theme, Fancy Footwork.  The gallery also plans to become the driving force for a shoe drive benefiting children in Haiti.  On the eve of the reception, gallery-goers are encouraged to drop off shoes that will be sent to help with the relief effort in the Caribbean country that was hit by a catastrophic earthquake this past January.

A highly original take on everything from the waist down, including but not limited to legs, feet, socks, and shoes, featured artists include Karen Garret, Kevin McCartney, Sergio Garcia, Carlos Donjuan and Alejandro Diaz.

Blake Malouf Art Opening

You can tell by her recent works that artist Blake Malouf has been laughing with the sinners and crying with the saints on her travels into third world countries from Southeast Asia and parts of Mexico.  The eclectic opening reception of over 70 photographs and archival prints are sweet, tragic, surreal and down right comical.  Malouf has cleverly captured the natural wondrous absurdities of life for her latest show.  The exhibit will be on view until May 21, 2010.
