Deep Ellum

Despite its bad-boy rap, Deep Ellum, established in the 1920’s as a jazz and blues Mecca is still one of the best places to find that funky one-of-a-kind art, restaurant and music scene in Dallas.  Ethnically diverse and a little gritty you’ll notice punks, up-scalers, club kids, and hipsters are equally at home at the more than 30 tasty dining spots, gallery openings, music festivals and music venues. It it has the largest collection of industrial architecture from the turn of the last century and many are now homes and lofts. It’s definitely worth dealing with a few weather-beaten for an alternate nightlife.

Drop off Textiles for Recycle and benefit Heart House Dallas

Dude, get rid of it! Did you know that 2.5 billion lbs. of textiles are recycled every year? If you want to be authentic Saturday, April 23rd,  drop off clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, toys and stuffed animals, sheets and other gently owned soft goods between 10 am - 5 pm. We know it means spending a little time dealing with closets and drawers first, but The Earth will thank you - and it’s a drive-through.

Trees in Deep Ellum hosts classic experience

The club scene is the natural place to revel in contrary and Trees will host a concert by the Orchestra of New Spain, including works by a 17th century Italian composer, who happens to be a woman. Contrarian Isabella Leonarda (shown), (September 1620 – 25 February 1704) entered the Collegio de Sant’Orsola, an Ursuline convent in Novara at the age of 16 where she created more than 200 compositions until her death at the age of 84.

Deep Ellum Art Walk 2011

Let’s get this out of the way before we tell you about one of our favorite art walks.  After attending a meeting on the proposed steetscapes last week, I heard the same thing that’s said every time there is talk about renovations and restoration of Deep Ellum - “we don’t want to be Uptown!”.

Okay one last time with feeling, Deep Ellum will never be Uptown, Bishop Arts or the Miracle Mile. It will progress, it will mature and it will grow into what it is supposed to be as a major player in the Central Business District and we need to accept that it will never be what it was when we were standing in line in the 80’s. With nearby housing in Treemont, Munger Place, Bryan Place, Junius Heights, Lakewood and Lake Highlands filled with younger boomers and older Gen Xr’s who want good dining and shopping to go with our funk, music, preservation of Deep Ellum buildings and memories, change is inevitable, however we can be influential in how it plays out by supporting the businesses and staying involved. Angry Dog

After 20 years, I’m not sure if we go to Angry Dog out of habit or because it’s the best place to get good and cheap State Fair food without going to the Fair. They have quesadillas, fried pickles, mushroom caps, burgers, dogs, nachos, chili, stuffed jalapeno’s - well, you’ll get what we mean when you go. Besides, we like eating with a mix of roadies, carnies, gamers and la-di-da’s.  Don’t get us wrong, they have yummie burgers, tuna steak sandwiches and a nice selection of salads and a chicken vegetable soup that will warm up your Angry Momma, whenever you finally show up with it.

Over 100 bottled beers and 20 on tap.

Twisted Root Burger

Definitely worth going for the atmosphere and the delicious choices that are more unusually designed and/or exotic meats piled high.  The hamburger is well, a nice hamburger.

Does Net Neutrality Loss = The New Ghetto

As a growing small media company owner, some of you know of my involvement in lobbying for Net Neutrality, which is the continued absence of regulation in regards to the Open Internet and something everyone should agree on and embrace.  This critical issue will be decided, as called by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski yesterday.  In the grand scheme of things, this affects all of us so today I’m encouraging all of you to learn about and support Net Neutrality and to encourage the FCC Board, located below, to vote against a Tier System on the Open Internet on December 21, 2010.
