Bishop Arts/Oakcliff

The Bishop Arts and North Oak Cliff neighborhood feels more like old-school SoHo.  Bohemian gift, antique shops, galleries and dining surrounded by an economically diverse neighborhood are the mainstays for residents in nearby Kessler Park and Stevens Park which is surrounded by a beautiful public golf course.  Natives are protective of the quaint historic and charming store fronts.  Because of Bishop Arts non-exclusive feel and lower real estate price tag, first-rate established restaurants have gained renewed interest from intrigued visitors and new locals who are moving in after discovering it’s only a 5-minute trek across the river from of downtown.

Work Prints: Commerce Street Bridge to Westmoreland Road

Remembering the first time I drove east out of downtown towards the city impound lot – don’t ask – and while crossing the Commerce Street bridge, continuing on, I noticed a series of old, abandoned hotels, gas stations and other buildings that all somehow still possessed a charm, style and unique architecture that hearkened back to a simpler era in our city’s history.

Restraining Order Hearing

Rumor has it

Follow up regarding the demolition alert (story below) for the Oak Cliff Community Church.  Despite the short notice, hopefully some of you will be able to attend a hearing today, January 21 at 4 pm at the George Allen Courthouse located at 600 Commerce Street in the court of the Honorable Judge Snelson in Ct-6B.  Both the construction company and DISD have been served notice.

Reprise of story published on Intownmix December 17, 2009:

The Old Oak Cliff Conservation League announced a Demolition Alert.  It was reported by Preservation Dallas that the Oak Cliff Christian Church now Adamson High School located at Tenth and Crawford Streets, built 104 years ago and one of the last old churches still remaining was going to be quietly torn down during the holidays while the children were on Holiday break which begins on Friday, December 18.  Current plans according to PD by DISD is for the building to be torn down and replaced with a tennis court.  They got their permit in a week?  Are you kidding me?
