Arts District

Many of Dallas’ original French, Irish, Mexican, Italian and African American families have been baptized in the Arts District since 1876.  That’s when St. Paul United Methodist Church for freed Slaves opened and in 1902, Sacred Heart Cathedral now known as the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe opened her doors.  With the recent opening of The Winspear Opera House and the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in 2009, numerous art groups have since located there.  It has a few restaurants and with eateries in Uptown, Downtown, Deep Ellum and the West End nearby, it’s easy for locals and visitors to get to the museums, cultural selections and festivals with plenty of time to spare.

With the Women's Chorus of Dallas

It's Her Party

Lesley Gore will cry if she wants to at this concert with the Women’s Chorus of Dallas but we’re thinking the Grammy winner and Academy Award nominee probably won’t.  The Jersey girl and Sara Lawrence graduate has a lot to smile about after having been a teen wonder between 1963-1967 when she recorded hits such as It’s My Party, Judy’s Turn to Cry, She’s a Fool, That’s the Way Boys Are, Maybe I know, The Look of Love and Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows with her very young record producer at the time, Quincy Jones.

Chinese Artist Makes U.S. Debut

“At last I am able to paint with colors and images with no limitation.” – Yang Jin Long

For most artists, this is the definition of art and personal expression, and is taken for granted.  Not so for Chinese-born Yang Jin Long whose magnificently expressive and evocative paintings are currently on display at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.  Yang grew up in a society that suppressed creativity and redirected its right-brained citizens to concentrate on more serviceable vocations like field laborers or factory workers.  He eventually became a product of the 1960s Cultural Revolution in China that continued during his university studies in the 70’s and despite his required stint in the military.
